PhD
Since 2019, Villa Arson has offered its own doctoral program based on research-creation. Following its integration with the Université Côte d’Azur, the school now provides a PhD program in project-based research in the arts.
Attached to the doctoral school SHAL (ED86) and its research laboratories, this doctoral scheme is aimed at high-calibre students showcasing dual expertise: in artistic creation — as artists, they should already enjoy a level of recognition and should be interested in the specific areas of activity offered by Villa Arson — and in research, to which end they should have completed supervized work at master’s level or the equivalent, and demonstrated a new and original approach to the creative field.
The objectives to be achieved during the PhD in Arts Research and Creation are as follows:
- Conceive and structure project-based research, articulated through the interweaving of theory and the practical and technical aspects of creation.
- Set this project-based research in a broader epistemological and technical context, both diachronically and synchronically, while drawing on an interdisciplinary environment (theatre, dance and performance, music, photography, digital arts, etc.).
- Develop methodologies and tools specific to the research topic, which have a wider application and/or can be transferred to other disciplines, forms of expression or skill sets.
During their period of study, doctoral students are encouraged to develop overseas partnerships and residencies. They organise study days and encounters on an international level and participate in the activities of the Université Côte d’Azur and the École Universitaire de Recherche Arts et Humanités (EUR CREATES) through research, knowledge-sharing and promoting scientific work.
Students also benefit from Villa Arson’s prestigious framework agreements and those set up between the Université Côte d’Azur and foreign universities (Berkeley, Laval, Montréal, Santiago, etc.).
