Brigitte Louter

A visual artist based in Amsterdam, Brigitte Louter (1996, NL) is the laureate of a three-months residency at Villa Arson in Nice, in the framework of a new partnership with the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in France.

Her practice encompasses installation, sculpture, drawing and occasionally moving components. She is interested in humanity’s continuous attempts to order, measure and map everything in search for world understanding. A search that can exist in a small act or a megalomaniac gesture. The failures inherent to these pursuits are at the center of her work. With an attention for (im)practicality, (im)possibility and (in)visibility, she hopes to create curious narratives that are structured by slippery and absurd logic. Often (mis)using visual elements and solutions used in data visualization, educational contexts and measuring instruments.

She graduated from the Royal Academy of Art The Hague and was a participant at De Ateliers Amsterdam from 2020-2022. Recently she was a resident at WIELS Brussels and EKWC Oisterwijk. Her work has been shown at P////AKT Amsterdam, Stroom Den Haag and Amsterdam Museum, among others.
In 2022 she set the world record for the ‘Largest folding measuring ruler’.

During this residency (between September 15 and December 14, 2025), the artist will work in the art school’s technical workshops to create a series of objects inspired by the form and function of industrial bellows, which protect the moving parts of machines. The works she intends to develop and produce will be entirely foldable and adaptable to the spaces of Villa Arson.
