In the framework of a new partnership with Institut français d’Israël, Villa Arson is hosting artist Michal Sophia Tobiass in residency from September 15 to December 18, 2023.
Born in Jerusalem in 1985, she lives and works in Tel Aviv – Jaffa (Israel).
Her research-based practice encompasses sculpture, photography, printmaking and choreography. Drawn to prehistoric art and lifeforms, Tobiass’ work is recognized by two types of creations: human- sized sculptures of holes and caves that are explored by the body, and a painterly act based on a method of tempera monotype prints.
Tobiass is a graduate of the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design MFA program (2016) and the Musrara Multidisciplinary School of Art’s photography department (2012). In 2019, she was awarded the Israeli Ministry of Culture Young Artist Award.
Tobiass has exhibited solo shows in museums and galleries in Israel, among which: Petah Tikva Museum of Art (2022), Almacén gallery (2022), Dana gallery (2020), Tel Aviv Artists Studios Gallery (2019), Basis Gallery (2016), the Museum of Israeli Art in Ramat Gan (2013).
She has also participated in many group exhibitions. Her works received support grants from The Foundation for Independent Creators by the Israeli Ministry of Culture and Sports, Mifal HaPayis Foundation, Art Lane Fund, Yehoshua Rabinovich Foundation and the Insall Milow Foundation for Contemporary Arts.
During her residency at the Villa Arson, the artist is developing a research project entitled « The life of shapes », which involves studying the petrolglyphs of Mount Bego and the Vallée des Merveilles and developing a painting and printing technique using natural pigments.
